An update on Thael from Pixie
I know she can have a tendency to exaggerate things and wanted to know if you guys have heard the same. This sounds pretty Grim.
"
Yeah I heard you went up there, no he isn't in fact they have him in a medically induced coma right now. He is septic and the infection is not getting any better. He had surgery to put two pumps in his side to flush out the infection but it is not helping, ontop of that they have a hose in his chest to remove the fluid off his lungs. And he is on dialyzes for his kidneys because they are not working at all.
His mom wanted to end it last week because he had a really really bad day and was in alot of pain, but his vitals came up the next day and she decided to hang in there for a little while longer. But honestly if looks as if he is not going to make it through this. You can go up and see him but he wont be awake."

I talked to Pixie more on the phone last night. Apparently a decision will be made this week. Josh his brother is coming back into town and they will decide to keep on working on him or let everything take its course. She said he has not really been conscious for awhile now but if anyone wants to go up there just to bring gifts they can.

Is he unable to express an opinion? He must have really gotten bad. I thought he was at least lucid part of the time. Its weird to hear that they are actually deciding on whether or not to let him die.

so, i met the mom and grandmother today, and they were kind enough to give me some more solid info:
visual analysis:
-he is gaunt, about 1/3 of his weight gone. he has a feeding tube, trach, a ton of stuff hanging from his IV rack, a dialysis machine, and a tube in his side sucking out infection. his hands and feet are drying out, despite mosturizing, and his skin is hanging off of him loosely. he looks bad, but actually better than a few weeks ago when i last went to see him.
the bad:
-he has pneumonia, and is still recovering from that. he was coughing up phlegm through his trach while i was there.
-if he survives, he will not be "better" for a long while, as his pancreas has to heal before everything else is done healing, and the pancreas could take as long as 9 months to go back to normal.
-he will not be able to have surgery in the forseeable future, and will simply have to live w/gallstones for a while. another one could pass at any time, and start the whole process over.
-if he gets well, he will likely be on some form of disability, as he may be too weak to work. though considering his field of work, he may be able to work normally.
the good:
-on the up side, he has... rallied in the last few days and is in much improved condition from a week ago.
-he is trying to produce urine, so they are putting him on more intermittent dialysis.
-he is conscious a great deal more, and not in the quasi-coma he was in.
-he is absorbing food through his stomach, though not alot.
Visiting info:
-during the day his family is down there, so if you want more info, go before 3 or 4.
-he is awake more now, and if he continues improving, he will be able to speak in a few days (they are talking about a trach attachment that will allow him to speak).
-if you want to visit, you must wear a gown, wash your hands, and put on gloves.
-now seems to be a good time for visiting. however, he is still only partially lucid.
i informed his mom that she can call me or jason if she needs something or has more info. any other questions?
