I just got off the phone with one of the residency directors of the pediatrics program at children's hospital, where I used to work. I'm going to go have a power meeting over there while I'm home for break, and maybe set up a rotation which would get me a shoe in for the program. this is nice and wonderful because it means I have a decent chance at being permanently back in oklahoma sooner rather than later. (of course, this means 2011, which doesn't seem that soon really). But it could be worse, I might not be able to come back until 2015, which would be what would happen if I didn't get a residency within oklahoma.

And most importantly, I've confirmed that I would have very good chances of moving on to one of my fellowships of choice at the same institution, and then receiving a position as an attending at the same hospital. going from fellowship to attending is a cool part of your career. It's probably the only time you'll quadruple your salary (or more) within a year. My first month as an attending I'll make as much as I did in a year at my admitting department job. Oh for the coming days of dying babies and unabashed stacks of cash.

Maybe all this seems premature, to be talking about residency days while I should be worried about the behavioral science practical, but it gets lonely here in the third-world-nasium, and it sucks here too. Sucks a lot.

Yeah, I'm thinking very seriously about neonatal medicine. Those little fuckers are so different from adults, even in biochemical ways, I find it very interesting. Oh, and the ability to stay in oklahoma for all of my post graduate education and still clear a quarter my first year as an attending helps too.
