During the war of 1812, the American navy consisted of four superheavy frigates each offering 48 guns of 28 lb bore, offering a broadside weight of metal of 672 lbs. The british navy dispatched a limited number of frigates, each carrying 36 guns of 24 lb bore, offering a broadside weight of metal of 472 lbs. But these vessels were considered "sixth rate", and the british triple deck first rate ships didn't dispatch for America until the american port cities were already fortified, several months later. A first rate ship has three decks of ~60 guns, bored in 36lb shot, generally fielding a broadside weight of metal at around 3240 lbs.
