D&D: FF - IC: Aturia City Marketplace, The great square

Post by Rusty »

::The previously bustling marketplace has been greatly subdued since the confrontation with a god, and the preceding calamities, but is beginning to return to life. Some of the surviving merchants have reopened their stalls, and a sufficient number of the citizenry have returned from hiding and make quiet transactions, overshadowed by their recent personal losses. The great square is the center of the marketplace, and the geometric center of the city, and though it is lower in elevation than the palace, which sits a few miles further in the city on a hill, it has been the political center of the city since the fall of the bastard king. In precisely the center of the great square, a cobbled open area generally not filled with merchant stalls, is a great burn where the Sun God fell.::

::A group of fifty or so humans and elves arrive, who are all dressed in simple garments illustrating them as monks of Radius. They order themselves into five ranks of ten with three in front, kneel, and begin a vigil for their fallen god. They remain awake and focused through the heat of the day and the chill of night, and burn candles after dark until sunrise.::

::Four very tall cloaked figures arrive in the city center, each of them is about ten feet tall and wears a white shroud that covers their features from head to toe. One of them arrived on horseback, atop a huge pegasus. They stand in a half circle facing the center of the great square, motionless and silent. At first their presence was unsettling to the local merchants and citizens, but as they didn't move they were eventually ignored for the pegasus, 15 feet tall at the shoulder, and arrayed in brilliant battle barding. The great flying horse mills about while unattended by his master, grazing where he can find grass, and shying away from the crowd.::

::Ratchnar feels a tingle go through him as one of the figures apparently shifts their gaze to regard him. The figures remain silent, but a voice occurs in Ratchnar's mind, a vibrant, sultry, female voice.::

OOC: I am no sure how any of the others feel, but anyone kneeling in vigil for that dead dick god Radius, in a city that is shortly about to become ours, is in for a world of trouble. I'm not sure several of this parties' characters will tolerate their behavior/presence. What happens if a fight starts on these boards, cause unless those misguided idiots are willing to leave in peace.... Im thinking they might get 'removed'. Fair warning.

OOC: Okay.

Imoak decided to take a stroll through the city to see what was going on. He had heard some rumors, and he knew that an influx of strangers had begun to arrive. Several of these had come to his attention, and one group in particular rankled his sensibilities. It was this group he was going to see.

As he entered the market, he saw them... a gathering of pious monks kneeling in somber reverence to a dick god. He pushed his way through the crowd, it wasn't hard. Most people got out of his way before he ever reached them. The monks alone seemed to be unaware of, or prepared to ignore his presence. As he got to the head of the group he stopped. In a voice that roared over the noise of the streets he announced himself.

"Hey, what in the 9 hells do you all think you're doing. You don't get to walk in here, and pay reverence to a dead whoreson of a god. A deity that ravaged this city with atrocity, and killed its people without cause. No.. no, you get to stop this ridiculous behavior, and leave. Make no mistake, you will stop, and you will leave. Your only choice is whether its the easy way... or the hard."

He made sure knock over any symbols they may have erected, and he made sure to speak loudly enough he would be heard by everyone around.

::The fifty monks do not move. Their three abbots take note of Imoak's outburst, and the oldest of them responds.::

"HOLD, friend, we are here peacefully, and require nothing of you or your fair city. We are here in reverence of THE DEATH OF OUR GOD, surely you are a man of virtue, and would leave us in peace to pay our respects in our own way..."

"You must have me confused with some one that cares, at all, about your beliefs toward that monster we buried in the ground. Do you understand why your 'god' died, I mean really understand? He was liked by so few people, even his own siblings. He was an ass, he set siege to this city out of misplaced anger. He got what he deserved, and no one here is mourning that. I don't care if you people mourn, but you aren't gonna do it here."

Imoak paused long enough to gesture around him, to show the scope of the city he spoke of.

"Surely a virtuous troupe," he smiled in a way, which illuminated his disdain for such a concept, "as yourselves can understand how insulting this behavior is to those that so recently struggled against your fallen patron. Even in this square are those injured by his actions so recently."

He pulled himself up to his full height, and bore down on the old man.

"You really need to go. I am more than capable of showing you to the gate, but I'm sure you remember the way. So please... take your insulting rituals, and go."

::The Abbot, incensed, responds firmly::
"I fear, friend, that you presume too much about our vigil. We sorrow for the end of our faith, as well as for the calamity that preceded it. We have sworn ourselves to this, and will not be moved by any force. After all the bloodshed that has happened here, why do you so brazenly threaten violence? We have come here peaceably and harmed nobody, please, leave us to our reverences, be on your way."

Imoak stood down for the moment, and seemed thoughtful. His face scrunched up in concentration, as he thought.

"I understand what you're doing here, and its good you threw in that bit about showing respect for the atrocities that were carried out here. Let me ask you something. You say you're here for the end of your faith. Is this separate from mourning the loss of the god? Are you, in fact, mourning that twice rotten deific garbage Radius, as a mother would her fallen son, or a knight would his fallen king?"

Imoak stood glowering, and awaited an answer to his query.

::The abbot, clearly offended at the slander of his beloved god, steels himself against insult, hunger, and thirst to continue to reply to Imoak.::

"We mourn the loss of our father, our captain, our inspiration. We mourn the loss of the Discipline of the Radiant Sun. We mourn the fallen here, who died in the wrath of our harsh master. We mourn the end of the age of Radius, whose discipline and strength bestowed discipline and strength into each of us. We mourn for ourselves, as our quest for physical purity through the trials of battle and brotherly honor is at an end."

::He pauses for a brief moment.::

"To my knowledge there is no government here, no law so to speak, and no central authority. Unless you can correct my ignorance, I must assume you are a ruffian in search of combat, and however skilled you may be, as I can surely assume you are given your appearance and bearing, know that you'll find no satisfaction from us. We have journeyed a vast distance to conduct our vigil, and will not be dissuaded by any force in all creation to stop. Please leave, your questions have been answered, your threats understood, and your offer of violence declined. I have no further desire to discuss this with you, and as you clearly hold some rage against us, I would ask that you direct it somewhere useful, such as furthering your martial discipline, or to drink if you must. I reiterate that we have come peaceably, taken nothing, harmed no one, and are merely here to conduct our vigil in the only place in all the planes that we can. Now, by all the stars in the sky, please leave us be."

::The abbot returns to his meditation.::

"Actually. there is a central authority here, and I'm not some ruffian. I am one of those who stood up to Radius in his final moments. I put myself in harms way to defy the stupidity of a god. You could say I am somewhat responsible for his death. I have come here to pick a bone with you, because you are offending the sensibilities and the sacrifices made in this place. Don't tell me you cant go somewhere else, one street, is as good as any other. You purposely came here, to the site of disaster."

His nostrils flaring, and muscles involuntarily flexing with barely contained anger Imoak shook himself so he could continue.

"You don't get to mourn a bastard in a city I, and my comrades nearly died to protect from him! If you want to mourn, do it somewhere not subjected to a childish gods unjust treatment. Go back to your temples, or where ever you came from, or if you truly feel bad for what Radius did here, get off your asses and help console this community. Fix houses destroyed by his wrath, help bury the bodies, help feed the starving."

Really getting into now, Imoak grabbed the priest/monk by his robes and hauled him up. He refused to be ignored out of hand. He had something important to say, and these guys didn't seem to be listening.

"The funny thing about violence, is that you can't really decline it. Now I didn't come here to hurt you, but you probably need some sense beaten into you. Find somewhere else to conduct your vigil, you aren't welcome. Now by all the stars in the sky... start doing something useful, for those put out by that unloved piece of desert waste you use to call a god, or get out of the city."

Imoak let the monk fall back to the ground. He was fuming, and his anger was nearly palpable. A gathering of on lookers had begun to form. The spectacle both entertaining, and scary. It was the prefect recipe for gawkers, and rumor mongers in a tired, humbled, and frightened city.
