We just have to figure out how to harness the true power behind the reseach community.

We're gonna need a scary lot of pizza and caffeine to pull it off though.

In all seriousness though, is there any such thing as the "right people" when it comes to the development of immortality and supermen? Even saying the world gets extremely lucky and the people who develop it are moral and upright by the Universal Bill of Human Rights standard, and further fortunate that they aren't motivated by greed. Those who don't have a share in these secrets (likely those considered immoral by those same standards) are going to panic in a very violent way when faced with the combination of a population clamoring for immortality and and enemy with an army of nano-tech augmented soldiers AND weapons. Think Cold War First Strike with whatever horrors science will have cooked up by then. Just a happy thought before I head to sleep.

I kind of agree with the research community comments, being there myself and all. The grad/phd interaction creates a great deal of the research, and often groundbreaking research and useful replication/expansion are both abandoned for something that is easier to make a thesis out of.

As far as the morality of those developing technology... I just kind of assume that we will have huge chaos and death before technology settles down. Or that it will just bleed into society without problems, like so much of the rapidly changing technological landscape. Though probably chaos/death for something involving immortality and nano-warriors... but thus is the nature of "progress," throughout human history; I try not to worry/care too much.

Yeah, mostly on topics like this, I look around, scratch my head for a bit and maybe bounce a few philosophical thoughts around with people who don't have to rent a clue (for a bit of fun)...then settle back in to pullin' my own plow and helping people one at a time...that's about all the world I can save.

Now, for a lot of fun, I can go bounce philosphical ideas off people who do have to rent a clue*

*this fun is reserved for dilettantes who nod sagaciously at the edge of some conversations, but you look and the eyes are blank.

Ever read a Terry Prathchet book called Jingo?

Hey, I heard about that island. Yay, for rising sea levels. I don't think very many people lived there, but isn't that area all really close to sea level anyway? I think there is a big city or two in that area that is in danger of also going under within our life times.

Rising ocean levels are a myth. Quit your democratic socialist communist propaganda, stop taking the rich man's money that he inherited... err... earned fair and square, and give my kids the toxic environment they deserve.
