It looks great except for the director. JJ Abrams, however popular Lost is, is known for leaving huge numbers of questions that keep people wanting more. Star Trek usually ends on a positive note with few if any open questions, a notable exception being spock's "death" at the end of Wrath of Khan.

that said, I'm always a fan of reimagining dated material, and this looks like the "batman begins" of star trek.

I'll probably be watching a pirated version around the same time that you guys are watching it in theaters. Which I feel free to say on the internet because intellectual property rights aren't protected in the country I live in.

Oddness. I have a certain fondness for linguistic study after my years of CS (which -shockingly- includes a lot of linguistics because of the need to learn grammar and syntax to construct programing languages).

that is so fucking cool

Incidentally, since we're on the topic, the local creole spoken in dominica is unique, in that it includes structures and words native to the Carib indians, of which the last surviving tribe lives here.

That's a pretty good article, although a bit long. Luckily today at work has been exceptionally slow, so I've had time to read. :P

I really like this. I think I'm going to send it to my professor in biosocial psych. Man, it really does go against the prevailing theories though. I took a whole class on this, and everything pointed towards a common linguistic experience. While I don't think it necessarily disqualifies the notion of a LAD (language acquisition device) I think it does change the nature of what such a thing would have to be.

I couldn't wear any of those shirts without blushing and feeling awkward. My nerd genes have been down-regulated.
