Solar roads get DoT funding for further research. This is more then a few steps ahead of where I would have anticipated we could be. Its fun to live IN the future

Its a sad state of affairs when the biggest thing holding us back from real progress is the politics of our society and not the resources or minds behind it all. The technology is there and ready, and I honestly cannot think of any draw backs. Installation time would be so short as well since it would be pre-made sheets that are sent out, simply bolt them down and hook them up. They could be so simple they would be hack proof as well.
If they made them wifi they could provide connectivity for passengers on highways, and allow cars to be fitted or designed with a transponder and relay system that allows greater management of traffic flow, the funneling of information to drivers based on location and speed, and interface with emergency services, if necessary. Imagine a little screen or readout that tells you where you are, what's nearby or coming up at the next exit, and is touchscreen and lets you make reservations at hotels, order takeout, and cycle through a menu. Might have a little box in the corner that shows you ads and deals for businesses within a certain distance of the highway.
While I'm not excited about the potential for ads, it would get the corps behind it.
Cool stuff though. iRoad.

I hate corporations. I get tried of them constantly proving as an obstacle for real progress. That said, those roads are neat, and amongst a plethora of other cool inventions, which could catapult us into a better age of living, IF our society can pull its head out of its ass.

I'm admittedly late coming into this conversation, but there are already multiple cable companies using the same lines, multiple power companies using the same lines. Corporations can "sponsor" sections or zones of roads and be responsible for operation, maintenance, billing, etc. That way corps become investors in the project and not barriers.
The Light Side is Calling! . . . . . . . . . . .it's lonely...
That's true, and would be a good way of getting corps involved... problem there though eventually becomes road ownership issues, and corporate control of what is supposed to be a free utility, or at least one that is freely available and outside of private sector control. We're already seeing how the cable companies are trying to control the internet via access.
